Dr JVW Kalala is a successful Medical Doctor, with at least twenty-five years of extensive experience in clinical practice at the time of this print. He has a vested interest in the field of Maternal and Child Health (Mother and Child) and has had vast exposure both nationally as well as internationally to symposia and workshops that enhance the program of Continued Professional Development. He has a profound business and community involvement through innumerable engagements across all spheres of life. He has been the Senior Manager: Medical Services at St. Elizabeth Regional Hospital in Lusikisiki, Eastern Cape from December 2008 to November 2013, and emerged as a great force of inspiration and motivation to both the hospital community and beyond.
He then assumed higher responsibilities from December 2013 when he became the Chief Executive Officer in the same hospital, tackling head on the challenges of a hybrid developmental regional hospital in their enormity and aligning programs to the broader Health Service Transformation platform with more emphasis on the preparation for the inception of the NHI. Among various other responsibilities while in this Executive Management Office, Dr Kalala has served as the OR Tambo DMT member, EC Eastern Region Financial Risk Management Team, Lilitha Nursing College Council Member, Provincial and Local Circumcision Committee, all of which have widened his understanding of the dynamics and scope of Leadership and Management peculiar to this Province.
It has also been his honor to be part of the Albertina Sisulu Executive Leadership Program in Health (ASELPH), a two-year MPH collaborative program between Pretoria University-University of Fort Hare-Harvard University, from 2015.
He has also served as a Manager: Medical Services in the Ugu Health District, and was part of the Murchison Hospital Healthcare Team and the DMT that worked tirelessly for the realization of the broader government mandate: Quality Health for all South Africans. This hospital, and Maternity Department in particular, having to receive numerous recognitions and accolades that include the award by the MEC for a “Zero Percent Maternal Mortality” for three consecutive years during his time as Clinical Governance Head in this institution.
He later joined the King Edward VIII Hospital [now Victoria Mxenge Hospital] in September 2021 as a Medical Manager. This was at a very critical transformation point as this institution was being transformed from the hybrid status to a fully-fledged tertiary hospital by all regards. He then joined the hospital executive team and this mandate was basically upon his desk.
Later in October 2023, Dr Kalala ventured back into private practice, a calling that reunited him with the community and where he spends exciting moments doing the best of what he loves most – serving the underserved, and advancing the greater vision of “a better life for all”. His approach to health services is that of a “Bio-Psych-Social Model”, a leverage from a philosophy that acknowledges health and wellbeing as a product of well harnessed and balanced synergy between physiological, psychological and social factors that people contend with throughout their daily lives. Of course, these elements must be underpinned by a sound and solid Spiritual foundation.
He has served the Country through various engagements in the Health-Political Discourse as a Medical Students Leader from 1995 around conceptualization and inception of the Community Service Program, thanks to the then Health Minister Dr Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma. Further to that he has contributed in the landscaping of our Health Delivery Platform from as far back as when he was part of the Organizing Committee for the Year 2000 Symposium on the Future of Medicine in South Africa which was held at Caesar’s Palace in Johannesburg – SA. At this time he was both a JUDASA National President, as well as SAMA Council Member.
Dr. Vusi Kalala had been part of a formidable team that comprise both the Ugu Health District and Murchison Hospital Joint Operations Committees. His contributions and participation has been well recognized, hence a further extension of responsibilities to the Ugu District Municipal JOC by a special invitation from the office of the Deputy Mayor who is the Head of the District Political Command.
He has been instrumental in driving a well guided and clearly calculated COVID-19 Management Plan, whose success has been witnessed right from its inception.
